With just a few simple ingredients and the magic of your microwave, you can have homemade caramels ready in no time. The result is a silky, melt-in-your-mouth treat that’s perfect for sharing with friends or adding to your dessert spread.
- Ingredients:
- 1 cup unsalted butter
- 1 cup packed brown sugar
- 1/2 cup sweetened condensed milk
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup chopped nuts (optional, such as pecans or walnuts)
Directions:
- In a microwave-safe bowl, melt the butter in the microwave for 1-2 minutes, or until fully melted.
- Stir in the brown sugar, sweetened condensed milk, vanilla extract, and salt until well combined.
- Microwave the mixture on high for 3-4 minutes, stirring every 1 minute to prevent the caramel from burning.
- Once the mixture is smooth and has thickened, remove from the microwave and stir in the chopped nuts, if using.
- Pour the caramel mixture into a greased 8×8-inch square pan or silicone baking mold. Spread it evenly.
- Let the caramel cool for at least 30 minutes to an hour, or until it is set and firm enough to cut into squares.
- Cut into small squares and enjoy!
