Buttermilk Pie is the quintessential southern dessert that brings comfort and nostalgia with every bite. The smooth, custard-like filling is subtly sweet and balanced with a touch of spice from cinnamon and nutmeg, all encased in a flaky, buttery crust. It’s a dessert that doesn’t overwhelm but offers a delicious simplicity that’s hard to resist.

  1. Ingredients:
  • 1 pie crust (store-bought or homemade)
  • 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 3 large eggs, beaten
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Directions:

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together the sugar, flour, salt, nutmeg, and cinnamon until well combined.
  3. Add the melted butter, buttermilk, eggs, and vanilla extract to the bowl. Whisk until smooth and fully incorporated.
  4. Pour the mixture into the prepared pie crust, spreading it out evenly.
  5. Bake in the preheated oven for 45-50 minutes, or until the center is set and the top is golden brown.
  6. Remove the pie from the oven and allow it to cool completely before slicing and serving.
  7. Optionally, dust the top with powdered sugar or serve with whipped cream for extra richness.
