Ingredients:

  • 2 lbs round steak or cube steak
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 onion, sliced
  • 1 green bell pepper, sliced
  • 1 can (14.5 oz) diced tomatoes
  • 1 can (6 oz) tomato paste
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon dried basil
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1/4 cup flour (for thickening)
  • 2 tablespoons water

Directions:

  1. Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Brown the steak on both sides, about 3-4 minutes per side, then transfer to the crockpot.
  2. In the same skillet, sauté the onion and bell pepper for 2-3 minutes until softened. Add the diced tomatoes, tomato paste, beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, pepper, salt, basil, and oregano. Stir to combine.
  3. Pour the tomato mixture over the steak in the crockpot.
  4. Cover and cook on low for 6-8 hours, or until the steak is tender.
  5. About 30 minutes before serving, mix the flour with water to create a slurry and stir it into the crockpot to thicken the sauce.
  6. Serve the Swiss steak with mashed potatoes, rice, or crusty bread.
