Baklava is the perfect dessert for anyone who loves a sweet, flaky, and nutty treat. The layers of crisp phyllo dough, combined with a generous filling of chopped nuts and cinnamon, are soaked in a rich, fragrant honey syrup that brings it all together. When baked to perfection, it transforms into a golden masterpiece that is both crunchy and soft in all the right places.
- Ingredients:
- 1 package phyllo dough (16 oz)
- 2 cups mixed nuts (walnuts, pistachios, almonds), chopped
- 1 cup unsalted butter, melted
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1 cup water
- 1 cup sugar
- 1/2 cup honey
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/2 teaspoon lemon juice
Directions:
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Brush a 9×13-inch baking dish with melted butter.
- Layer 10 sheets of phyllo dough in the dish, brushing each sheet with melted butter before adding the next.
- Sprinkle a thin layer of chopped nuts and a pinch of cinnamon over the phyllo dough.
- Continue layering with 5 more sheets of phyllo dough, brushing each with butter, followed by another layer of nuts.
- Repeat the process until all the nuts are used, then top with the remaining phyllo sheets (about 10 more), brushing each sheet with butter.
- Using a sharp knife, cut the layered pastry into diamond or square shapes.
- Bake for 45-50 minutes, or until the baklava is golden and crisp.
- While the baklava bakes, make the syrup by combining water, sugar, honey, vanilla extract, and lemon juice in a saucepan over medium heat. Bring to a simmer and cook for 10-15 minutes until thickened slightly.
- Once the baklava is done, remove it from the oven and immediately pour the hot syrup over it, making sure the syrup soaks into every layer.
- Allow the baklava to cool completely before serving.
