Baklava is the perfect dessert for anyone who loves a sweet, flaky, and nutty treat. The layers of crisp phyllo dough, combined with a generous filling of chopped nuts and cinnamon, are soaked in a rich, fragrant honey syrup that brings it all together. When baked to perfection, it transforms into a golden masterpiece that is both crunchy and soft in all the right places.

  1. Ingredients:
  • 1 package phyllo dough (16 oz)
  • 2 cups mixed nuts (walnuts, pistachios, almonds), chopped
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup honey
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon lemon juice

Directions:

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Brush a 9×13-inch baking dish with melted butter.
  2. Layer 10 sheets of phyllo dough in the dish, brushing each sheet with melted butter before adding the next.
  3. Sprinkle a thin layer of chopped nuts and a pinch of cinnamon over the phyllo dough.
  4. Continue layering with 5 more sheets of phyllo dough, brushing each with butter, followed by another layer of nuts.
  5. Repeat the process until all the nuts are used, then top with the remaining phyllo sheets (about 10 more), brushing each sheet with butter.
  6. Using a sharp knife, cut the layered pastry into diamond or square shapes.
  7. Bake for 45-50 minutes, or until the baklava is golden and crisp.
  8. While the baklava bakes, make the syrup by combining water, sugar, honey, vanilla extract, and lemon juice in a saucepan over medium heat. Bring to a simmer and cook for 10-15 minutes until thickened slightly.
  9. Once the baklava is done, remove it from the oven and immediately pour the hot syrup over it, making sure the syrup soaks into every layer.
  10. Allow the baklava to cool completely before serving.
