Ingredients:

  • 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 tbsp white sugar
  • 2 egg yolks
  • ½ cup milk
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 1 cup shortening
  • 2 egg whites
  • 9 apples, peeled, cored, and sliced
  • ¾ cup white sugar
  • ½ tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1 ½ cups confectioners’ sugar
  • 1 pinch salt
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 3 tbsp milk
Directions:
  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9×13 inch pan.
  2. In a medium bowl, mix flour, 2 tbsp sugar, and ½ tsp salt. Cut in shortening until mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  3. Combine egg yolks and ½ cup milk; stir into flour mixture.
  4. Roll half of the dough on a floured surface to fit the pan size. Place dough in the pan, spreading a light coating of egg white over it.
  5. Fill with sliced apples, sprinkle with ¾ cup sugar and cinnamon. Roll out remaining dough and place over apples. Brush with egg white.
  6. Bake for 35-40 minutes until crust is golden.
  7. Mix confectioners’ sugar, pinch of salt, vanilla, and 3 tbsp milk until smooth. Drizzle over cooled bars. Cut into squares.
