Imagine biting into a warm, crispy pastry filled with the sweet and spiced flavors of tender apples. That’s exactly what you get with these Crispy Fried Apple Pies. The classic combination of apples and cinnamon, encased in a golden, flaky crust, creates a nostalgic and comforting treat.
Ingredients:
- 4 large apples, peeled and diced
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/4 cup sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 2/3 cup shortening
- 4-6 tablespoons cold water
- Vegetable oil for frying
- Powdered sugar for dusting
Directions:
- In a saucepan, combine diced apples, 1/2 cup sugar, cinnamon, and lemon juice. Cook over medium heat until apples are soft, about 10 minutes. Set aside to cool.
- In a mixing bowl, combine flour, 1/4 cup sugar, and salt. Cut in shortening until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Gradually add water, stirring until a dough forms.
- Roll out the dough on a floured surface to 1/8 inch thickness. Cut into 5-inch squares.
- Place a spoonful of the apple mixture on each square. Fold the dough over the filling and seal the edges.
- Heat oil in a deep fryer or large skillet to 375°F (190°C). Fry pies until golden brown, about 3-4 minutes on each side. Drain on paper towels and dust with powdered sugar.
