Ingredients:

  • 5 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 3 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed
  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 2 teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 1/4 cup warm water
  • 2 cups buttermilk
Directions:
  1. In a small bowl, dissolve yeast in warm water and set aside.
  2. In a large bowl, combine flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. Cut in butter and shortening until mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  4. Add yeast mixture and buttermilk, stirring just until dough comes together.
  5. On a floured surface, gently knead dough 3-4 times.
  6. Roll out dough to 1/2 inch thickness and cut with a biscuit cutter.
  7. Place on a baking sheet and let rise in a warm place for 30 minutes.
  8. Preheat oven to 425°F (220°C).
  9. Bake biscuits for 12-15 minutes or until golden brown.
