Polish Sausage, Sauerkraut, and Potatoes is a hearty and flavorful dish that’s simple to prepare and perfect for a comforting meal. The savory sausage, tangy sauerkraut, and tender potatoes create a satisfying combination that’s sure to please. Here’s how to make it:
Ingredients:
- 1 pound Polish sausage (kielbasa), sliced into 1/2-inch rounds
- 4 large potatoes, peeled and diced into bite-sized pieces
- 1 (32 oz) jar sauerkraut, drained
- 1 medium onion, sliced
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 teaspoon caraway seeds (optional, for added flavor)
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 1 cup chicken broth (optional, for a moister dish)
- Fresh parsley, chopped (optional, for garnish)
Instructions:
- Preheat the Oven (if Baking):
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) if you plan to bake the dish instead of cooking it on the stovetop.
- Cook the Sausage:
- In a large skillet or Dutch oven, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the sliced sausage and cook until browned on both sides, about 5-7 minutes. Remove the sausage from the skillet and set it aside.
- Sauté the Onion and Garlic:
- In the same skillet, add the sliced onion and sauté until softened and translucent, about 5 minutes. Add the minced garlic and cook for an additional 1-2 minutes until fragrant.
- Add the Potatoes:
- Add the diced potatoes to the skillet and stir to combine with the onions and garlic. Cook for about 10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the potatoes start to soften and brown slightly.
- Combine with Sauerkraut:
- Add the drained sauerkraut and caraway seeds (if using) to the skillet. Stir well to combine all the ingredients.
- Finish Cooking:
- Return the browned sausage to the skillet, and stir everything together. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
- If you prefer a moister dish, pour in the chicken broth.
- Cook Until Tender:
- Cover the skillet and reduce the heat to low. Let the dish simmer for about 25-30 minutes, or until the potatoes are tender and all the flavors have melded together. If you’re baking, transfer the mixture to a baking dish and bake for 30-40 minutes, until the potatoes are tender.
- Serve:
- Once done, garnish with fresh parsley if desired and serve hot. This dish pairs well with rye bread or a simple green salad.
Tips:
- For a smokier flavor, you can use smoked kielbasa or add a small amount of smoked paprika.
- If you like your sauerkraut less tangy, rinse it under cold water before adding it to the dish.
- This dish can be easily customized by adding sliced apples or carrots for a touch of sweetness.
Polish Sausage, Sauerkraut, and Potatoes is a satisfying, one-pot meal that’s full of traditional flavors. It’s easy to make and perfect for a cozy family dinner or a casual gathering with friends.
