This Sauerkraut Casserole brings the comforting flavors of Bavaria right to your table. The tangy sauerkraut, combined with savory ground beef, creamy sour cream, and melty Swiss cheese creates a dish that’s rich in flavor and texture. The optional caraway seeds add an authentic touch, enhancing the casserole with their distinctive taste.
Ingredients:
- 1 lb ground beef
- 2 cups sauerkraut, drained
- 1 onion, diced
- 1 cup sour cream
- 1 cup shredded Swiss cheese
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 teaspoon caraway seeds (optional)
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 4 medium potatoes, thinly sliced
- 1/2 cup beef broth
Directions:
- Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
- In a skillet, heat olive oil over medium heat and sauté onion until translucent. Add ground beef, salt, and pepper. Cook until beef is browned. Drain any excess fat.
- Layer half of the thinly sliced potatoes at the bottom of a greased baking dish.
- Spread the cooked beef and onion mixture over the potatoes.
- Sprinkle caraway seeds over the beef (if using) and evenly distribute the sauerkraut on top.
- Add another layer with the remaining sliced potatoes.
- Pour beef broth over the entire casserole.
- Spread sour cream on top and sprinkle with shredded Swiss cheese.
- Cover with aluminum foil and bake for 45 minutes. Remove foil and bake for an additional 15 minutes or until the top is golden brown and bubbly.
