This Sauerkraut Casserole brings the comforting flavors of Bavaria right to your table. The tangy sauerkraut, combined with savory ground beef, creamy sour cream, and melty Swiss cheese creates a dish that’s rich in flavor and texture. The optional caraway seeds add an authentic touch, enhancing the casserole with their distinctive taste.

Ingredients:

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 2 cups sauerkraut, drained
  • 1 onion, diced
  • 1 cup sour cream
  • 1 cup shredded Swiss cheese
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon caraway seeds (optional)
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 4 medium potatoes, thinly sliced
  • 1/2 cup beef broth

Directions:

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. In a skillet, heat olive oil over medium heat and sauté onion until translucent. Add ground beef, salt, and pepper. Cook until beef is browned. Drain any excess fat.
  3. Layer half of the thinly sliced potatoes at the bottom of a greased baking dish.
  4. Spread the cooked beef and onion mixture over the potatoes.
  5. Sprinkle caraway seeds over the beef (if using) and evenly distribute the sauerkraut on top.
  6. Add another layer with the remaining sliced potatoes.
  7. Pour beef broth over the entire casserole.
  8. Spread sour cream on top and sprinkle with shredded Swiss cheese.
  9. Cover with aluminum foil and bake for 45 minutes. Remove foil and bake for an additional 15 minutes or until the top is golden brown and bubbly.
