These Soft and Chewy Pretzel Bites are the perfect snack, combining the warm, salty, and soft texture of freshly baked pretzels. With a golden crust and chewy interior, they are irresistible when served with mustard, cheese, or any of your favourite dips.
- Ingredients:
- 1 1/2 cups warm water
- 2 teaspoons active dry yeast
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- 3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
- 1/4 cup baking soda
- 1 large egg, beaten (for egg wash)
- Coarse sea salt (for topping)
Directions:
- Preheat your oven to 220°C (200°C fan)/450°F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- In a small bowl, combine the warm water, yeast, and sugar. Stir until the yeast dissolves, then let sit for 5 minutes, or until foamy.
- In a large bowl, mix the flour and salt. Pour in the yeast mixture and melted butter, then stir to form a dough. Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for about 5-7 minutes, until smooth and elastic.
- Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a clean tea towel, and let it rise in a warm place for 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
- Once the dough has risen, punch it down and divide it into small pieces, about the size of a golf ball. Roll each piece into a ball, then cut the ball into 6 smaller pieces to form bite-sized pieces.
- In a large pot, bring 4 cups of water to a boil. Add the baking soda to the boiling water (be careful, as it will bubble up). Lower the heat to a simmer.
- Gently drop the pretzel bites into the water, a few at a time, and cook for about 30 seconds, then remove with a slotted spoon and place them on the prepared baking sheet.
- Brush the pretzel bites with the beaten egg and sprinkle with coarse sea salt.
- Bake for 10-12 minutes, or until golden brown.
- Allow the pretzel bites to cool slightly before serving.
