Ingredients:

  • 8 slices of thick Texas toast
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 1/2 cup ketchup
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon mustard
  • 1/2 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 2 tablespoons butter, softened

Directions:

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a large skillet, cook the ground beef and onions over medium heat until the beef is browned and the onions are soft, about 5-7 minutes. Drain the excess fat.
  3. Add ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, mustard, salt, and pepper to the beef mixture. Stir and let it simmer for 5-7 minutes until the sauce thickens.
  4. While the beef is simmering, butter both sides of the Texas toast slices and place them on a baking sheet.
  5. Bake the Texas toast in the preheated oven for about 5 minutes, or until they are golden brown.
  6. Once the beef mixture is ready, spoon it generously over each slice of Texas toast.
  7. Top each with shredded cheddar cheese and place them back in the oven for 3-5 minutes, or until the cheese is melted.
  8. Serve immediately, garnished with extra cheese if desired.
